Uses of Vanilla Beans
  • Identify good vanilla Beans for Baking and Cooking.
  • Beans need to be dark brown, long, pliable, moist, and plump.
  • Vanilla beans need to have a good smell.
  • Well cured Vanilla beans can roll between fingers without breaking.
Home made vanilla Extract
  • Recommended to use > 100g of Vanilla pod per Liter of Vodka or Rum with 35 Percent or more strength of Alcohol.
  • Chop or Split open the Beans into a clean sealable Jar with Alcohol.
  • Ratio of beans and Alcohol is 50g of vanilla to 160z of Alcohol.
  • Ensure all beans are submerged. Close the container tightly that allows for perfect macerate.
  • Leave it for 6-8 weeks or longer while shaking every 3-5 days.

  • Bourbon refers to the originally named Bourbon Islands (now Reunion), which are located off the coast of Madagascar. Vanilla beans do not contain any bourbon whisky.
  • After saffron, vanilla beans are the most labor-intensive spice.

  • Outside of Mexico, vanilla beans must be hand pollinated since the pollinator, the Melipona bee, cannot survive.
  • When the vanilla orchid blooms, it must be pollinated within 24 hours or else the bloom dies and no vanilla pods are produced.

  • It is the only orchid fruit humans consume.
